    CDC will issue new guidance on school openings, Pence says, after criticism from Trump – The Washington Post

    After President Trump called government recommendations for reopening schools ‘very tough & expensive,’ other administration officials stressed that the guidance is optional.

    Bullshit. CDC shouldn’t have to update guidelines because of the President. Period.

    Sweden Has Become the World’s Cautionary Tale – The New York Times

    Its decision to carry on in the face of the pandemic has yielded a surge of deaths without sparing its economy from damage — a red flag as the United States and Britain move to lift lockdowns.

    The U.S. seems to want to attempt to duplicate the results now.

    TIL: expectedDeprecated

    I learned today that WP_UnitTestCase (the class that WP uses for PHPUnit tests) offers a expectedDeprecated method.

    For example:

    class WP_Test_Jetpack_User_Agent extends WP_UnitTestCase {
    	/**
    	 * Confirm an old improper static use of Jetpack_User_Agent_Info still functions.
    	 */
    	public function test_jetpack_user_agent_is_tablet() {
    		$this->setExpectedDeprecated( 'Jetpack_User_Agent_Info::is_tablet' );
    		$this->assertFalse( Jetpack_User_Agent_Info::is_tablet() );
    	}
    }

    Everyone will be tested every day?

    “Everyone attending the convention within the perimeter will be tested and temperature checked each day,” Erin Isaac, communications director for the host committee, said in the memo.

    Call me old fashioned, but if you need to test everyone every single day of an in-person convention, maybe… maybe… the convention should be virtual instead?

    BMW is going all-in on in-car microtransactions – The Verge

    Would you want to “subscribe” to heated seats?

    Source: BMW is going all-in on in-car microtransactions – The Verge

    With rentals or leases, this is interesting.

    Imagine a car rental service that buys all one brand with different form factors (sedan, pickup/suv, minivan, or whatever) to save on maintenance overhead.

    When you rent a car, you can pay $X/day for the basic, car with no extra features. You pay $X+Y/day for various options enabled. Something goes weird during our rental, bam, free upgrade.

    The car companies charge 50% of the retail price for the upgrade. Rental companies charge regular price, keep 50%. Seems like a win-win.

    Leases, as the story mentions, is interesting since you can lease a car with one config and on the resale market, it can be sold as anything.

    For a car that I purchase, I would want a permanent unlock. I wouldn’t want to have to subscribe for 10 years to have heated seats or whatever the whole time.
